IN A NUTSHELL, WHAT IS YOGA?
Yoga is an ancient spiritual practice which has existed for more than 6000 years, historians tracing it's origins in India, however today it is a global practice. It is linked broadly to hinduism, buddhism and other asian cultural practices, as well as modern western exercises like Pilates. However Yoga itself is not a religion or purely an 'exercise' in the sense you would commonly think of today. Yoga is about freeing the tensions in our bodies and minds which cause us to experience stress, in it's many facets. We start by releasing the tension in the body, by stretching the fascia and strengthening the muscles, we achieve this through the asanas (postures). After opening the body we look to the more subtle realms of pranayama (breath retention) and meditation to find the real "juice" in our practice. There are eight 'limbs' of Yoga and the practices I've described here are just one part of that experience called 'Hatha' Yoga. Much of our coaching sessions to begin with focus on Hatha Yoga practices and learning a regular meditation practice. If the student enquires, then further down the learning journey a broader philosophical discussion can be under taken where we look at karma yoga (service) and your greater purpose in the world.
WHAT IS YOGA COACHING?
Yoga Coaching is the service I offer my clients which combines life coaching and the science of yoga to help move your life in the direction of your dreams. Whatever challenges you are currently facing or goals you wish to achieve, the practices I can help you put in place will encourage you to uncover your greater purpose and lead to an experience of more contentedness and happiness in every day life.
WHY WOULD I CHOOSE ONE ON ONE OVER A GROUP STUDIO CLASS?
By working together one on one I will be able to create a personalised practice that is most suited to your body, constitution and experience. If you are new to yoga, attending a group class where you are one of twenty students can be a daunting experience. Like wise if you have a specific health concern, it is safer to work closely with a teacher who knows your issues rather than be just another face in the crowd. By working together closely we can go through the practices at your pace and you can ask as many questions as you like. I've also found my students are more confident to practice independently at home, rather than rely on 'getting to a class' to get their yoga fix.
HOW WILL PRACTICING YOGA IMPROVE MY LIFE?
A regular personal yoga practice will be beneficial for all aspects of your life. Even if you are new to yoga and are only interested in the 'physical' aspect of it, the more you practice, the more the other elements will become attractive to you, it's sequential. Think about all the things you do in your life to help you relax. For many people this includes activities like; having a few wines, going on holiday, shopping, watching TV or a movie; many of these are great past times, but they can also have negative side effects; hangovers, credit card bills, feelings of laziness or no holiday leave! You may have a list of other activities that work for you, but that also have a less than desirable side to them. If practiced correctly yoga can help bring great relaxation and clarity to your life with very little effort. Neuroscientists believe we have more than 60000 thoughts every day. It is no wonder many of us feel bombarded. Practicing yoga helps us to find spaciousness between the thoughts, so we can start to choose how we react to certain situations that crop up in our life ~ and if there's one thing you can be sure of in life, things will crop up! Much more value than flexibility, yoga's greatest gift can be to cultivate a non reactive mind ~ space for you to be YOU.
CAN YOU TEACH ME TO MEDITATE?
Absolutely. I am very passionate about meditation. It is a simple practice that requires very little effort and if done accurately can manifest amazing results in your life. A short meditation of ten or twenty minutes is the equivalent of a 4 hour sleep, so a regular meditation helps you to feel a lot more rested day to day. It is the quickest tonic to a less stressful life. There is a lot of mis information regarding meditation in society, how can something so beneficial be so simple? The criticising mind will be quick to find the catch. But honestly there is no catch, as long as you are a willing participant and resolve to get in the chair every day and practice, there is nothing standing in your way of reaping the huge benefits.
HOW WILL YOGA IMPROVE MY PREGNANCY?
Most woman will experience some kind of extra stress on their bodies or minds during pregnancy. If you are one of the few that waltz through unscathed I take my hat off to you! While the body focuses on developing and nourishing the child, the mother is often left with the 'second best' which leaves her immune system vulnerable. A regular yoga practice through out pregnancy will help manage stress and hormones, while on a physical level releasing and strengthening muscles in preparation for labour. In my coaching I put strong emphasis on various practices to help the mum to be, totally, relax. There is also a large focus on practicing certain pranayama breath retention that can be utilised in labour to cope with pain.

Babies who are not yet crawling are welcome to attend, with our total surrender that whatever mood they are in on the day could impact our session!
